Through our strategy, Making Great Art Work, the Arts Council is committed to improving
artists living and working conditions.
In publishing this policy — Paying the Artist — we build on that commitment by setting out a vision and plan to create change over the period 2020–2022.
We seek to create an environment in which artists can make work of excellence and ambition and be remunerated appropriately.
The policy expresses our commitment and position in terms of core values. It provides a set of best-practice principles for all those working in the arts to aspire to. It asserts our expectations of those we fund, of those we work with and of ourselves.
It says what we will do by setting out a series of actions we will undertake across the areas of research, developmental activities, funding related requirements and advocacy.
Implementation Plan - Revised and Updated 2024
The Paying the Artist Policy was launched in February 2020. It included an Implementation Plan setting out actions and desired outcomes for 2020 – 2022.
The Implementation Plan has been revised and updated for the period 2024 – 2025.

We have also updated our Statement of Practice document which outlines what we pay artists for different engagements and specific Arts Council programmes.
