The Arts Council congratulates Peter Whelan and the Irish Baroque Orchestra on their win in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Opera’ at the Olivier Awards. The nomination was one of two for Vivaldi’s ‘Bajazet’, a co-production between the Irish National Opera and the Royal Opera House, toured around Ireland and brought to the Royal Opera House, London with the additional support of Culture Ireland.
While the outstanding achievement award is a particular honour for Peter Whelan and the Irish Baroque Orchestra IBO, the two nominations for the production and the award are a great credit to both companies, to the excellence and open and collaborative spirit of each, and to all of the artists and other arts professionals involved.
To be recognised in this way has heightened and highlighted what was a landmark moment for Irish Opera, artists and music–making, and the Arts Council shares a wider pride in their achievements in bringing work of this quality to Irish audiences and in representing Irish Opera and Music abroad with such great distinction.
