Exhibition represents one of the biggest displays of Ireland’s architectural talent
Last year, the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2018 was curated by Irish architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. They were the first Irish nationals invited to curate La Biennale di Venezia in its 123 year history. As part of this major event, 16 Irish architect teams were invited to reimagine iconic works by international architects from the 20th Century, which was exhibited as:
Close Encounter, Meetings With Remarkable Buildings, Special Section of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia.
For its Irish debut, the exhibition is set to tour the country, which will be one of the biggest displays of architectural talent seen in Ireland. The show is being restaged at The Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork from 6 April to 20 June 2019, and at VISUAL Carlow from 20 September 2019 to 19 January 2020.
Close Encounter which was co-curated by Professor Hugh Campbell, features immersive sculptural installations by A2 Architects, Boyd Cody Architects, Bucholz McEvoy Architects, Carr Cotter & Naessens Architects, Clancy Moore Architects, Tom dePaor, Dominic Stevens & JFOC, Donaghy + Dimond architects, GKMP Architects, Hassett Ducatez Architects, Heneghan Peng Architects, Kevin Donovan & Ryan W. Kennihan Architects, Mary Laheen & Aoibheann Ní Mhearáin, Noreile Breen, Steve Larkin, Taka Architects.
"Close Encounter calls on the generosity of each of the invited architects to 'take' the work of another architect and help it to be remembered, understood, re-valued and appreciated for its own inherent worth," stated Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, Curators, 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia 2018.
Close Encounter: Meetings with Remarkable Buildings grew out of the Arts Councils Mentoring Initiative as a Special Project of Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, Curators of Freespace, the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice. Funded by the Arts Council, the aim of the initiative was to enable sixteen Irish architects, who were invited to participate at the 2018 Biennale, to develop skills in presenting and communicating their work to a public audience in Venice. The tour gives audiences here an opportunity to engage with this unique exhibition of architecture while contributing to the legacy of the Mentoring Initiative for architectural practice, curation and culture in Ireland.
The tour is produced by the Irish Architecture Foundation in partnership with the Glucksman and VISUAL Carlow and is funded by the Arts Council, with additional support from Dublin Port Company.
The IAF, in partnership with The Glucksman and the National Sculpture Factory, will also present the Curating Architecture Conference on 6 April 2019 in Cork.
